Question:
I have a funny feeling that the 5mg chewable Singulair that I am on recently
is exacerbating my minor erectile dysfunction problem. Is this a common
probleem with this drug?
Answer:
I'm not a doc but I think you're probably on the right track with this.
My doc prescribes 5mg of Terbutaline (aka Brethine, another asthma med) to
knock down a persistant erection--it works as advertised. A plus (after
sex) is that it gives me a nice, easy breathing, relaxed feeling.
As a matter of fact, yes -- ironic story. About year ago, I
took my first shot of Trimix at home. Had 20 units at the
doc's office which went well. Started with a 20 unit dose
at home. Could have been lack of anxiety, different
concentrations from the Pharmacies -- who knows.
Anyway, I produced a roaring boner that went on well past
the 2+30 limit the doc had imposed. At 3+00 I took the
first Terbutaline tab--seemed to help a bit. At 3+30 I took
the second tab. Seemed to be helping--maybe a bit more.
Then my wife suggsted a 'relaxing', *warm shower*. Had the
opposite effect! Turned from just 'good-wood' into a marble
dildo ! Was ready for the drive to the Urgent Care. Cooled
down a bit. That worked -- down and limp at 4+20.
So, this isn't a good antidote for you unless you're into
always, "showering with a friend."
Terbutaline does do the job. Last night, I woke up, rock
hard at 3:45 a.m., remembering I'd been that way since 11:45
p.m. Took 5mg. -- down in 20 minutes
Best bet is to explain your suspicions to the doctor that
prescribed the Singulair. Generally M.D.s will treat the
primary complaint with the most effective and cost-effective
medicine for that complaint--with minimal *known* side effects.
Problem is that many adverse E.D. side effects aren't
identified in clinical trials and are not documented in the
prescribing literature. Tain't until a few patients
complain that we wise up. E.D. is not a concern of most GPs
until the patient makes it an issue.
Share your suspicions, mention my Terbutaline story --
(Erection killing isn't a primary use of that med. It's
strictly an off label use). If your doc wants to discuss
with an M.D., send me a personal email and I'll send the
contact info for my Urologist.
